Presented by: The Australian Ballet
Resilience. Kinship. Connection.
Beneath cracked clay, a seed unfurls. Leaf. Bloom. Life. Promise. Crossing time and space, The Australian Ballet and Bangarra Dance Theatre present Flora by Frances Rings—an ambitious and powerful new dance collaboration.
Flora marks the fourth collaboration between the two companies and their first full-length work together. Drawing on Bangarra’s distinctive storytelling, the piece journeys through the evolution of Australian flora, tracing the deep impact of historic and environmental events on the land and its people.
From sleeping yams beneath the earth to the gums that breathe our air and stand tall across generations, flora bears witness to Australia’s unfolding history. When ships brought animals that trampled and weeds that choked, flora endured. Through fire, flora regenerates and renews—mirroring the resilience of Australia’s First Peoples.
Featuring striking choreography by Mirning woman Frances Rings, Bangarra’s Artistic Director and Co-CEO, Flora is set to an original score by Kalkadungu man and internationally acclaimed composer William Barton. The production is further brought to life through dynamic costumes by Meriam Samsep woman Grace Lillian Lee, set design by Elizabeth Gadsby, lighting design by Karen Norris, and cultural consultancy from Matthew Doyle, a descendant of the Muruwari Aboriginal nation.
The most significant collaboration between the companies to date, Flora features an ensemble of more than 35 dancers drawn from both The Australian Ballet and Bangarra Dance Theatre.
Journey through our living history in this unforgettable new dance experience.
